On March 24 at the Emigration Museum in Gdynia, Deputy Chief of Mission John Law took part in the Kościuszko Foundation's biennial Alumni Association Conference organized this year by the Kościuszko Foundation's Alumni Association, the Faculty of History at the University of Gdańsk and the Emigration Museum.
John Law gave the keynote speech at the conference whose theme was "Mother of Exiles: American Patterns of Immigration Policy and the Challenges of Contemporary Europe." In his speech entitled "America's cultural identity and its linkages with immigration," DCM Law said immigration has been "at the heart of America's never-ending effort to define itself and its national and cultural identity." Conference participants included 40 Polish academics previously awarded scholarships by the New York-based Kościuszko Foundation to pursue research in the United States, Marek Skulimowski, the President of the Kościuszko Foundation, and members of the Board of Trustees visiting from the United States, Professors Ewa Radwańska Hanna Chroboczek Kelker.
Founded in 1925, the Kościuszko Foundation promotes closer ties between Poland and the United States through educational, scientific and cultural exchanges. It awards up to $1 million annually in fellowships and grants to graduate students, scholars, scientists, professionals and artists, and promotes Polish culture in America. In his remarks, DCM Law noted the celebrations underway in Poland and by the U.S. Embassy to celebrate 100 years of Poland regaining its independence and the contributions of Americans during the last century to keep Poland and the United States close together. In this regard, he lauded the efforts of the Kościuszko Foundation to promote closer people-to-people ties between the United States and Poland and urged alumni to continue these efforts.
