Kosciuszko Foundation in Washington DC - Polish Posters

Polish posters are among the most interesting  of  Polish  graphic arts. The artistry of Polish poster art has been recognized  since the end of the 19th century.

Starting in the 1960's, graphic artists in Poland moved away from  realism and symbolism and began using metaphoric imagery. These posters, produced as public announcements,  represent the intensely personal connections of the artists with their subject matter, challenging the viewer to be an active participant in finding their meaning.

Our collection includes 300  movie, theatrical, circus, tourist and political posters from the 1960's and 70's, considered the most interesting period in Polish poster art.  A rotating selection  is on exhibit at the Center and a project is underway to preserve and document them, as well as to  create a traveling exhibition to send around the country.  We are also preparing a comprehensive catalogue of the collection
