Royal Łazienki – King Stanisław August’s Dream Residence - a lecture

Thursday, November 21, 2019, at 7:00pm

The Royal Lazienki, King Stanisław August's summer residence, is a wonderful place where a classicist architecture is harmoniously blended with its natural surroundings featuring fabulous gardens. Palace on the Isle, the beloved private residence of the last king of Poland, housed the most precious works of art from the royal collection.

The jewels of the collection were displayed during the king's reign in the Picture Gallery at the Łazienki palace. Many are still there, but a big part of the collection was sold after the death of Stanisław August (1798) by his heirs. These paintings are now to be found among the most prominent collections in Europe – eg. Wallace Collection, London or Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam but also in the United States: the famous Polish Rider by Rembrandt can be admired in New York, the Frick Collection.

Today the Royal Łazienki, one of the most beautiful eighteenth-century royal residences in Europe, is also a great modern museum, full of activity and ideas.

Ms. Izabela Zychowicz, Deputy Director of the Royal Łazienki Museum, will present the history of the Royal Lazienki and the king's ideas regarding the character of this beautiful villa. Ms. Dorota Juszczak, curator of paintings, will focus on the Stanisław August's vast collection of paintings.

The lecture is free and open to the public. Space is limited. Registration required.

The event is organized in cooperation with the Royal Lazienki Museum and Polish Cultural Institute New York, and co-financed by the Minister of Culture and National Heritage within the framework of the Inspiring Culture Program.
