Michael Slavin began playing the piano at age 5 and at age 9, attended the Juilliard School of Music preparatory division for the next 10 years. His undergraduate years were spent at Cooper Union in New York City where he received a bachelor's degree in physics. He then attended medical school, and afterwards practiced ophthalmology and neuro-ophthalmology in Long Island for 25 years.

At Juilliard, he gave many local piano recitals (two at Town Hall in NY City) many of which were broadcasted by WQXR and WNYC. At age 11, he performed the Mozart Piano Concerto in D major (the Coronation) with the Little Orchestra Society in Lincoln Center. Several years later he performed Beethoven's Piano Concerto No. 1 in the Brooklyn Academy of Music with the Brooklyn Philharmonic, after winning a piano concerto competition (circa 1965).

He was awarded first prize in the Chicago international amateur piano concerto competition in May 2012 (playing Beethoven piano concerto #3), was a second prize winner in an international piano competition in Colorado Springs (2013), and was a finalist in each international solo piano competition in Chicago and Washington, DC in 2012.  In the latter two events, he was also awarded a certificate for the best interpretation of a romantic piece.

Michael won two recent piano competitions in Paris and Warsaw and was the winner of the 12th Washington International Piano Artists Competition in 2014. He is a member of the New York Piano Society, and gives numerous recitals in the New York City area.
