Our Honoree this year will be Walter Zachariasiewicz - one of the most prominent leaders of Polish community in the United States. He was imprisoned several times during the World War II, and after being freed from Soviet gulag, Mr. Zachariasiewicz worked for the Polish Government in-exile. He was in charge of Polish Welfare Office in Chelyabinsk (Russia), worked at the Special Project Office of the Polish Consulate in Istanbul, and later was appointed as a government delegate in charge of care for Polish refugees in Rome.

After his immigration to the United States Mr. Zachariasiewicz continued as a social worker at Polish Immigration Committee helping thousands of Polish refugees. In recognition of his role, he was elected to the boards of directors of the American Council of Voluntary Agencies for Foreign Aid and the American Immigration Conference. In the 1960's he joined National Democratic Committee being responsible for the activities of thirteen ethnic groups in the elections campaign of John F. Kennedy and Lyndon B. Johnson. He was later appointed an International Relations Special Assistant to the US Postmaster General John A. Gronouski.

Throughout the years Walter Zachariasiewicz has been actively involved in numerous organizations including The Kosciuszko Foundation, Polish American Congress, Radio Free Europe, and Polish American Arts Association. He was also a president of the National Council of Polish Cultural Clubs and personally appointed by Holy Father to the Board of Directors of John Paul II Foundation. He is the author of the book The Independence Ethos of American Polonia. Awarded with Commander's Cross, Star of the Order of Polonia Restituta by the President of Poland.
