Inspired by Song and Dance - A recital by Magdalena Filipczak, violin and Jessica Xylina Osborne, piano

One of the most outstanding Polish violinists of her generation, Magdalena Filipczak, winner of numerous international competitions and awards, partners with one of most sough-after collaborative pianists, Jessica Xylina Osborne, in a recital "Inspired by Song and Dance". The program will include works by Bacewicz, Britten, Debussy, Karłowicz, Piazzolla, Previn, Ravel, Szymanowski and Wieniawski, some from Filipczak's "Essence of Violin" CD, praised by the STRAD Magazine as "glittering...beguiling...captivating...hauntingly atmospheric", and her upcoming album.

Polish violinist Magdalena Filipczak has performed in the UK (including Wigmore Hall, Barbican Hall, St Martin in the Fields, St John's Smith Square), Europe (among others Het Concertgebouw, Tallinn Philharmonic, Cracow Philharmonic, Baltic Philharmonic), as well as the USA (Carnegie Hall), Canada and South America. Magdalena is a recipient of prestigious CUNY Graduate Center Fellowship, where she is studies violin with Daniel Phillips and Donald Weilerstein, as well as voice with Robert White, and is a DMA in Performance candidate.

She is a winner of numerous international competitions including IV Heino Eller International Violin Competition in Estonia, Gold Prize of 2018 International Manhattan Music Competition, Silver Prize at 2018 Berliner International Music Competition, First Prize at 2017 US International Concerto Competition. As a young creator of culture, and for her competition successes, she was awarded 'Young Poland' Scholarship by the Polish Ministry of Culture.

Magdalena has recorded for TV and Radio stations including the BBC Radio 3, Dutch Radio 4, Chicago WFMT. She has performed with artists such as Peter Frankl, Clive Greensmith, Gilbert Kalish, Alan R. Kay, London Mozart Trio, Nicholas Mann, Charles Neidich, Roger Tapping, Vivian and Donald Weilerstein.

Magdalena has also been featured in three CDs of chamber music by Second Viennese School Composers on Etcetera, recorded at the Banff Arts Centre. With the Royal Northern Sinfonia she recorded solos for 'Songs to the North Sky' by Grammy Award composer Tim Garland. Recently she recorded the next disc with Tim Garland, "The Weather Walker", and Two CDs with music by Peter Gregson: "Quartets: One" and "Quartets: Two".

Magdalena graduated from the Guildhall School, where she studied violin with a distinguished Polish violinist Krzysztof Śmietana. Magdalena taught at the City University on London, Trinity Laban Conservatoire, and has given masterclasses in Brazil, Yellow Barn's YAP, and as a part of Perlman Music Program's Residencies. She teaches violin and chamber music at Aaron Copland School of Music (Queens College) in New York.

Her future projects among others include a recording CD with a renowned pianist Peter Frankl and a debut recital at Carnegie Hall.

Hailed by the Washington Post as a pianist "with a refreshing mellowness and poetic touch" after her debut with the National Symphony Orchestra, Jessica Xylina Osborne is one of the most intensely expressive and passionate artists of her generation. She is widely considered to be one of the most sought-after collaborative partners, and has worked closely with some of the world's finest musicians, including Timothy Eddy, Hilary Hahn, and Mark Kosower. She has performed throughout the continental U.S., Europe, and Asia, and has appeared in recitals at many of the world's most celebrated venues, including Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center, the Kennedy Center, the Musée du Louvre in Paris, and the Seoul Arts Center. Television and radio appearances include performances on PBS's Live from Lincoln Center, Minnesota Public Radio's A Prairie Home Companion, Performance Today, WQXR's McGraw Hill Young Artists' Showcase in New York, among others.

Ms. Osborne is a laureate of numerous international piano competitions, winning first place in the International Bartok- Kabalevsky- Prokofiev competition and first place at the National Division of the Music Teachers' National Association Yamaha Competition. She was also awarded the Audience Prize at the Houston Symphony's Ima Hogg Competition. In her solo career, Ms. Osborne undertakes ambitious projects that reflect creativity in programming with the goal of bringing infrequently performed works to a mainstream audience. For example, her 2017 - 2018 solo recital program provides a fresh look at the salon concert, pairing music by lesser-known composers with related, more familiar selections that were either written for or arranged for performance in the salon. She is also dedicated to including music written by women in her recital programs.

Ms. Osborne holds degrees in solo piano performance from Indiana University and Rice University, and a Doctorate of Musical Arts in piano performance from Yale University. She currently resides in New York City, where she is Piano Faculty at Third Street Music Settlement. MORE: www.xylinapiano.com

AGATA SURMA is best known for her sensual paintings of women enveloped by rich and lustrous abstracts made of paint and varied embedded textures. A Polish-born, American artist, she grew up in Orange County, CA with her artist father and a constant smell of oil paint around the house.

With a Masters degree in International Development from Cambridge University, UK, Agata worked on resolving conflicts around natural resources in Africa until 2011, after which, she returned to painting full time. She spent 6 years in Panama working in her art studio and promoting arts and culture with her husband and fellow artist, Hector Guillen.  Together, they co-founded and managed a local art space for emerging artists.

Agata's artwork has been exhibited internationally, and can be found in private collections in Europe and the Americas. Agata moved to New York with her husband in the Summer of 2018, after a promising show at Contra Galleries in Manhattan and a residency in Northern Germany earlier that year. Currently, she happily splits her time between Panama and New York.
