Multi Trio ~ A bit of family history

Many years ago, before she graduated from the Music Academy in Gdańsk and won the laurels at international competitions, Ewa Pobłocka accompanied her mother, singer Zofia Janukowicz-Pobłocka, at the piano. The repertoire of that duo consisted mainly of Polish chants, alongside masterpieces of the European vocal art. As time goes in circles, in 2013 Ewa Pobłocka performed together with her daughters Ewa Leszczyńska and Maria Leszczyńska as Multi Trio. The idea came from Hubert Pobłocki, their father and grandfather. Their friends were also very supportive. The first concert of the family trio took place in Wejherowo. For a good reason, as this was where Ewa Pobłocka made her stage début accompanying her mother.

The Trio

The age gap between Ewa and Maria is big enough to say that there are three generations represented on stage – the mother at the piano, the elder daughter – vocals and piano, and the younger playing the piano, cello and saxophone. We can listen to their performances in various configurations and different instrument combinations, and since there are not many original compositions for a trio, the band recurs to adaptations and arrangements of the selected works. Masterpieces of Romanticism are the core of their repertoire.

Multi Trio is conscious about promoting Polish contemporary music, regularly inviting young musicians to collaborate. 

Ewa Pobłocka was born in Chełmno. She comes from a musical family, as her mother Zofia Janukowicz-Pobłocka was a professional singer. Ewa began her piano education at the age of five. She studied at the State Higher School of Music in Gdańsk (today's Academy of Music) under Zbigniew Śliwiński and Jerzy Sulikowski, and she graduated with honours in 1981. She continued her education completing her post-graduate studies in Hamburg under Conrad Hansen. She also had artistic consultations from Jadwiga Sukiennicka, Rudolf Kerer, Tatiana Nikolaeva and Martha Argerich. She is laureate of international piano competitions in Vercelli (1977), Bordeaux (1979), and Warsaw (1980).

Ewa Pobłocka debuted on stage at the age of twelve, accompanying her mother during singing recitals in Poland and abroad. She has performed in almost every European country, and also in both Americas, China, Indonesia, Vietnam, South Africa, Singapore, Korea, Japan and Australia. She played in such famous concert halls as Herkules-Saal in Munich, Musikhalle in Hamburg, St. Petersburg Philharmonic Hall, Théâtre des Champs Elysées in Paris, Kyoi Hall in Tokyo, Auditorio Nacional in Madrid, Barbican Centre and Wigmore Hall in London, Musikverein in Vienna, Mozarteum in Salzburg, Lincoln Center in New York, the Philadelphia Philharmonic Hall, Glenn Gould Studio in Toronto and many others. As a soloist she performed with the London Symphony Orchestra, the English Chamber Orchestra, Orchestra del Maggio Musicale Fiorentino, Bayerischer Rundfunkorchester, Tonkünstler-Orchester Niederösterreich, New Japan Philharmonic, the Polish Chamber Orchestra, Sinfonia Varsovia, the Warsaw Philharmonic Orchestra and the Polish Radio National Symphony Orchestra in Katowice.

Ewa Pobłocka enjoys performing chamber music. Currently, Ewa Pobłocka is part of the Multitrio ensemble with her daughters Ewa Leszczyńska (soprano) and Maria Leszczyńska (cello), presenting chamber repertoire composed for such forces.

Ewa Pobłocka was a soloist for many world premiere performances and first recordings of the works of Polish contemporary composers, including Andrzej Panufnik, Witold Lutosławski, Paweł Szymański and Paweł Mykietyn (the two last-mentioned composers dedicated their works to her).

There are almost 50 records in her phonographic output, covering the solo, chamber and orchestral repertoire ranging from Baroque to contemporary music recorded for such labels as Polskie Nagrania „Muza", Deutsche Grammophon, Pony Canyon, Victor JVC, Conifer Records, CD Accord, and BeArTon.

The artist is also a valued pedagogue. She conducts piano classes at the Academy of Music in Bydgoszcz and at the Fryderyk Chopin University of Music in Warsaw. She has given master classes in Canada, Vietnam, Japan, Mongolia, China, Ireland, Norway and Korea. She is also Visiting Professor at the Geidai University of Arts and Music in Tokyo and Nagoi. She was invited to serve as a jury member at such Polish and foreign piano competitions as the Unisa International Piano Competition in Pretoria (2004), the International Chopin Piano Competition in Warsaw (2005, 2015), the Esther Honens International Piano Competition in Calgary (2006), and the International Piano Competition in Hamamatsu (2012).

Maria Kamila Leszczyńska was born in Warsaw in 1998. She started playing the cello at the age of 8 in Michał Nyżnyk class, and nowadays she is studying with Marcin Zdunik..She started to have piano lessons at the age of 5 and now she continues studying with Ewa Pobłocka. Maria Leszczyńska is a laureate of many cello and chamber music competitions such as: 1^st National Cello Tournament in Warsaw (2009 - 1^st prize),  10^th International Juliusz Zarębski Music Competition (2010 - 1^st prize), 5^th National Cello Competition "Young polish cellist" in Bochnia (2013 - 1^st  prize), 12^th Chamber Music Meetings in Sochaczew ( 2014  - in clarinet and piano duet - 2^nd prize), 11^th International Cello Competition in Liezen, Austria (2014 - 2^nd prize), 18^th International Competition of Bohdan Warchal in playing bow instruments in Dolný Kubín, Slovakia (2014 -1^st prize and The Prize for performance of work by the 20^th & 21^st cent. composer). She has participated in many music workshops with professors such as: Tomasz Strahl, Kazimierz Michalik, Andrzej Bauer, Marcin Zdunik, Bartosz Koziak, Magdalena Bojanowicz, Katarzyna Popowa - Zydroń (piano), Marek Moś, Karol Marianowski, Jakub Jakowicz (orchestra and chamber music). In 2013 Maria was awarded with Minister of Culture's Scholarship.

Ewa Leszczyńska In 2008, she graduated from the piano class of Jerzy Sulikowski at the Stanisław Moniuszko Academy of Music in Gdańsk, where she also began studies on the Vocal Department , before continuing her vocal studies with Margaret Hayward at the Conservatorio Giuseppe Verdi in Milan. Extremely fond of vocal music, she also performs chamber music and is a valued partner for singers (including the bass Gianluca Buratto, with whom she won the Rotary Prize in 2008, Katarzyna Trylnik, Davide Fior and Joanna Freszel) and instrumentalists. While still a pupil, she enjoyed success in many festivals and competitions, winning prizes and distinctions. She has taken part in masterclasses given by Jerzy Artysz, Paul Gould, Dalton Baldwin, Katarzyna Jankowska, Krystyna Borucińska, Maja Nosowska, Helga Muller-Molinari, Teresa Żylis-Gara, Larissa Giergieva, Teresa Berganza, Urszula Kryger, Christine Lehman, Jadwiga Rappé, Olga Pasichnyk, Ewa Podleś, Thomas Quasthoff, Hartmut Höll, Deborah York, Karl Kammerlander and David Dolan. From 2007 to 2010, she was a member of the Laboratorio Interdisciplinare di Musica e Spettacolo (Limes) in Milan, performing as a singer, actress and dancer in theatrical and operatic productions: La sagra della primavera (dir. Pasquale D'Ascola, choreog. Simone Magniani), Idillio d'amore tra pastori (dir. Filippo Crivelli), Ivresses (dir. Pasquale D'Ascola). As a singer, she has performed the solo part in Mozart's Exultate, jubilate in Milan (2010), presented the complete set of Chopin's songs in a concert recorded for TV Vatican and performed the soprano part in Mozart's concert aria 'Ch'io mi scordi di te' with the Baltic Philharmonic Orchestra in Gdańsk (2010). In that same year, she also took part in a stage performance of excerpts from Buxtehude's Membra Jesu nostri in Lugano. In 2012, as a singer, she won First Prize in the Giosuè Carducci Competition in Madesimo, where she was also a semi-finalist in the piano section. She has also been awarded a scholarship by the Polish Institute in Vienna, under which she took part in the International Baroque Music Course – Austria Barock Akademie in Gmunden, working with the renowned Baroque specialists Ruben Dubrovsky, Ilia Korol, Deborah York and Lydia Vierlinger. In a Baroque Music Competition held in Austria, she received the ABA Award. In 2013, she appeared with Joanna Kaniewska in a concert at the Radiokulturhouse in Vienna and took part in the Dunkle Zeiten Wien project presented at the Off Theater in Vienna. Since 2013 she collaborates regularly with Barock Ensemble Les Roses Souvages. In Duo with a pianist Anastasia Levandovskaia they are giving together song recitles with a special place for Hugo Wolf and Franz Schubert Lied. In 2015 she performed together with Jan Cizmar (liute) "In darkness let me dwell" of J. Dowland  on the  concert dedicated to a great English contemporary composer Thomas Ades in National Warsaw Opera.
