Portraits of an Intellectual and Political Landscape by Bernard Aptekar

The exhibition comprises stunning portraits of well-known political and intellectual figures, as interpreted by celebrated New York artist Bernard Aptekar. It has been already shown at the Galicia Jewish Museum in Krakow, Poland - April through September, 2011.

ONGOING EXHIBITION FROM MAY 17th - JUNE 12th

Bernard Aptekar was born and lives in New York City. He grew up in Brooklyn and attended New York City public schools. In 1952, he won a national scholarship from Seventeen Magazine that enabled him to attend college. He received his B. F. A. summa cum laude from Pratt Institute and also wan a Fulbright Fellowship and Ida C. Haskel Traveling Fellowship. He received his M. F. A. from Indiana University in 1957. He has traveled widely and was one of the original Soho homesteaders, opening a studio in the area before it was known as Soho. He and his loft and studio were featured in an article in New York Living.  

A professor of art at new York City College of Technology of The City University of new York, he taught at the Cooper Union Art School and Pratt Institute for more than 10 years. He has exhibited frequently in both group and one-person shows, and was a founder of the 10 Downtown Group in the late 1960's. He has received a CAPS Fellowship from the new York State Council on the Arts and has been a program supervisor for the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs.
