AFRO POLKA CONCERT

SHARING INTEREST IN MULTICULTURAL COLLABORATION,
EXCHANGE, AND IMPROVISATION

Maciek Schejbal graduated from the Academy of Music in Krakow, Poland, where he studied classical percussion. Throughout his performing career in Poland, South Africa and the US, he worked with the legends of Polish song, Ewa Demarczyk and Marek Grechuta; Cracow Radio, Johannesburg and Cape Town Symphony Orchestras; South African musicians Winston Mankunku, Robbie Jansen, Basil 'Manenberg' Coetzee, Tony Cedras, Cameroonian singer Kaïssa, and multidisciplinary artist Bahar Behbahani, among others. His books for drummers include Afropop Play-Along and Afro-Caribbean Rhythms. Maciek has been Drummers Collective faculty member since 1998. In the fall of 2018 Maciek released his solo album Afro-Polka featuring John Patitucci, Jerome Harris, Bakithi Kumalo, Brian Charette and many other, top-tier, New York musicians.

Emanuel 'Chulo' Gatewood (Associate Musical Director / Bass Guitar) This talented musician has performed all over the world with some of the greatest musicians to grace the art form. His list of credits include none other than Chaka Khan, Mos Def, Miriam Makeba, Harry Belafonte, Savion Glover, Dianne Reeves, Regina Carter, Michael Franks, Lew Soloff, Jennifer Holiday, Pat Martino, Maxwell, Hugh Masekela, Mical Urbaniak, Eileen Ivers, Paul Schaffer and more. Many of the artists Emanuel recorded with relied on his artistic strength for their international tours. He has toured with the accomplished Pat Martino, Jennifer Holiday, Diane Reeves, Harry Belafonte, Savion Glover, Miriam Makeba, Eileen Ivers, Michael Franks and Maxwell. Notably he has also recorded "Listen to your Heart" with Nepo, "Immigrant Soul" with Eileen Ivers, "Welea" with Miriam Makeba, "This is my Home" with Joel Harrison, and "Twisted Funky and Blue" with Timothea. Emanuel now lives in Brooklyn, New York but was born in Chicago, Illinois. He also lived in Boston, Massachusetts where he studied at the world renowned Berklee College of Music, majoring in composition and performance. He was also the private student of renowned jazz pedagogue Charlie Banacos.

 Anders Nilsson is a Swedish New York-based guitarist, composer, improviser. He plays electric guitars, 11-string alto guitar and baĝlama. His output spans a wide musical spectrum ranging from solo shows ("Night Guitar"), Anders Nilsson Group (a rhythm-heavy band in NYC),  a trio with saxophonist Michael Attias, and bassist Ken Filiano, Anders Nilsson's AORTA (a jazz-rock type band in Sweden).  He is also a band member in several groups playing jazz or improvised music. After receiving a BA from Malmö Academy of Music and having worked as a musician in Sweden for a few years he moved to New York in 2000 and got his MA from CCNY. He has performed and/or recorded or toured internationally with many artists associated with the blues/jazz/experimental paradigms such as Kalabalik (with Raoul Björkenheim and Gerald Cleaver), Paquito D'Rivera, William Parker, Elliot Sharp, Eugene Chadbourne, Fay Victor Ensemble, poets John Sinclair and Bonnie Barnett, art-metal band Angelblood, and Persian vocalist Mohsen Namjoo. Always welcoming of interdisciplinary interaction, he has collaborated with Butoh artist Akira Kasai, theater director Doris Mirescu and video artist Arrien Zinghini. Nilsson's work as a composer includes music for short films, dance performances, string quartet, theater plays, as well as a constantly growing book of a hundred compositions including brief to epic works for solo guitar, jazz, to large experimental ensemble works. Many of these works have been released on several acclaimed albums.
