Rita Cosby Quiet Hero Lecture and Book Signing in Pittsburgh

Please join us,  the University of Pittsburgh Department of Slavic Languages and the Polish Falcons of America for an event with award-winning journalist Rita Cosby at Kent State University's First Energy Interactive Lecture Hall in Franklin Hall!

The lecture is free and open to the public. Following the lecture, Rita Cosby will sign her book, Quiet Hero, which is "her father's harrowing story as a WWII Resistance Fighter and Prisoner Of War.  After a daring escape, he and his comrades were saved by American forces.  An emotional story of a daughter finally discovering her own father."

Books will be available for purchase for $26 at the event. No credit cards will be accepted. All proceeds from book sales will benefit the Kent State University Friends of Poland organization.

$12 for adults

Proceeds benefit the Joseph Divis Grant. This grant aids student volunteers from Ohio who are selected to participate in the Arts Enriched English Camp in Poland. This grant helps defray airfare costs to Poland.

Arts Enriched English Camp

On July 1, 20 volunteer arts educators and teaching assistants from Kent State University, the Kent Community, communities in NE Ohio, and educators from Michigan, Pennsylvania Illinois Utah, New York and North Carolina will leave for Poland to teach in the Kosciuszko Foundation Arts Enriched English Camp under the directions of Mary Kay Pieski, President of the Kosciuszko Foundation-Ohio Chapter and the American Staff Leader.  The camp is located in Nadwarcianski Grod-Zalecze, Poland from July 3 - July 21, 2010. The American staff will embark on a five- day tour of the important historical and cultural sites of Poland at the conclusion of the camp including the birthplace of Frederyk Chopin.

Kosciuszko Foundation Arts Enriched English Camp

Residents of Northeast Ohio are preparing to inaugurate a comprehensive arts enriched pilot program this summer in Zalecze, Poland that will be taught in English to High school students in Poland. Under the direction of Mary Kay Pieski, President of the Ohio Chapter of The Kosciuszko Foundation, this innovative 3-week program has received a $4500 grant from the Delta Kappa Gamma Educational Foundation to purchase instruments and supplies.

Additional sponsors are the Kosciuszko Foundation NYC, Kosciuszko Foundation Ohio Chapter, Polish Commission of UNESCO, and Zwiazek Harcerstwa Polskiego, the Polish Scouting Organization.

The Kosciuszko Foundation's Annual Banquet and Awards Ceremony is the major fundraising activity supporting the educational and culture programs of the Northeast Ohio Chapter. The evening will celebrate Mr. Eugene Bak's dedication to the Polish-American community and his passion for Polish culture and heritage. Mr. Eugene Bak is the Founder and Executive Director of the Polish-American John Paul II Cultural Center and active member of the Kosciuszko Foundation.

Piano Recital by Jonathan Floril

Jonathan was born in 1989, in Quito, Ecuador. At 11, moved to Spain and earned his precollege at Rodolfo Halffter Conservatory with Mateo Lorente. Floril continues his piano studies in New York as the recipient of the Harold and Helen Schonberg Pianist Scholarship at Manhattan School of Music.

In 2008, Floril was awarded First Prize and the Jan Gorbaty Memorial Prize -- for the best performance of Chopin's works -- at the 59th Kosciuszko Foundation Chopin Piano Competition.
